Google and Jio working on affordable 5G smartphones for India: Pichai

It is a matter of last year when we have come to know that Reliance Reliance chairman Mukesh Ambani has announced that he is going to make a 5G smartphone with Google, which will be basically for India only. Not only this, Google has also invested close to Rs 33,700 crores which is about 7.7% share of Jio platforms.

However, since then, we have not seen any development on this front. Now, as per reports, Google CEO Sundar Pichai has confirmed that Google is teaming up with Jio to make affordable 5G phones for India.

In a recent virtual interview with select journalists, Pichai confirmed that Google continued to engage with Reliance Jio to work on its planned initiative. To help companies promote the adoption of 5G technology in the country, it is to create affordable 5G supported smartphones.

“The Google CEO says that he is fully focused on making a similar phone, and he is still constantly working on this project”.

Now, Reliance Jio is committed to its Digital India initiative which aims to bring modern digital technologies into the hands of every Indian citizen. We have seen the company launch ultra-affordable 4G phones and offer super cheap data plans for low-income groups in the country. The company is also reportedly developing an affordable laptop, which it aims to release in India later this year.

Also, Google’s investment in the company last year was a part of the “Google for India Digitization Fund”. Pichai plans to invest over Rs 75,000 crore in India over the next five years to accelerate the adoption of modern digital technologies.

“Google is also exploring new opportunities to infuse funds from its USD 10 billion Indian Digitization Fund (IDF) and will make some announcements later this year,” Pichai said. Hence, going forward, we may see new affordable, Google-Jio-branded 5G smartphones in the country. This will help to increase manifold adoption of 5G technologies in India in the coming months.
